Studio Lighting 101! Chicago Portrait Photographer | Jennifer Jackson Photography

i *heart* studio lighting!  i love manipulating light and introducing it to objects and people in order to accentuate or diminish their form...i love soft diffused light and hard, edgy light.  but most of all i love teaching my advanced photography classes the basics of studio lighting using a simplistic arsenal of equipment: two hot lights, a stool, dark grey backdrop, a white bounce, grey card, a 35mm SLR and ilford FP4 b&w film.

below are just a few samples of some basic lighting setups.  my models were my students and YES, we did this during halloween...

meet amanda.
butterfly lighting, bounce fill under her chin, separation light behind her (aimed at the backdrop).

meet geena.
butterfly lighting, bounce fill under her chin, separation light behind her (aimed at the back of her head), barn doors masked off light at right and left to create shadows in the frame.

meet remy.
narrow lighting, bounce on the left (hair), separation light behind her (aimed at the back of her head).

meet tom.
narrow lighting, bounce fill on the left (hair & cheek), separation light behind him (aimed at the backdrop).

meet erin.
butterfly lighting, no bounce, separation light behind her (aimed at the backdrop), barn doors masked off light at right to create shadows in the frame and shot through a "found object" to create "watery" look below.

meet barrett.
